What is Breast Reduction
What is Breast Reduction (Mammoplasty)
Women having large breasts face many difficulties. It makes wearing fashionable clothes difficult, makes them prone to back and neck ache and draws unwanted attention many a times. This is where breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can be helpful. This is a surgical procedure with which women can enjoy firmer and smaller breasts that are easier to manage and are more in proportion to the rest of the body. In addition to aesthetic benefits, breast reduction surgery helps in getting rid of psychological problems and medical problems caused by larger breasts.
Surgery
The procedure takes between two and four hours and a general anaesthetic is used. During breast reduction surgery, in order to get the desired shape, the surgeon cuts in an anchor shape, creating a horizontal line underneath the breast and cutting down from the areola. The Surgeon takes away extra fat, skin and breast tissue, and relocates the nipple and areola (the coloured part around the nipple) into the new position.
Risks & Complications
As with any surgery, there is the small risk of complications with breast reduction surgery. At the time of your consultation, we will take you through that in detail so that you can take an informed decision.
We will not push you for surgery. We will give you all the time and guidance you need to take a decision. We will give you a comprehensive Breast Reduction Patient Guide to take home with you. How long does the procedure take?
Depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgery normally takes about 2 -4 hours, not including time in recovery.
Are the results permanent?
Yes, the results of breast reduction are permanent. If you gain a substantial amount of weight, or you have a baby, your breasts may become larger, however they will always be smaller than they would have been if you had not had the surgery.
When can I go back to normal day-to-day activities?
We recommend that people take two weeks off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical). Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for about 6 weeks after your surgery.
Are there any alternatives to this surgery?
No, the only way to substantially reduce the size of your breasts is by surgery.
Can I combine this procedure with other surgery?
Yes, you can combine this procedure with other breast or body surgeries. You can discuss this in full at your free consultation.
Will I have altered sensation in the area?
Whenever skin is cut, nerves are also cut; this may result in altered sensation to the area, particularly at the incision site. All care will be taken to maintain sensation as much as possible.
Will my breasts be in proportion to the rest of my body?
This is often the very reason women seek breast reduction. At your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your ideal size you wish your breasts to be and guide you as to what is achievable and the results you should achieve.
What weight should I be for surgery?
You should be at a healthy weight for your height when you have surgery as this lowers risks related to anaesthetic. For the best aesthetic results, we recommend that you are at your ideal weight at the time of surgery as further weight loss or gain can change the results of your surgery.
