Chickenpox

Chickenpox used to be a common illness, Pregnant women, newborns, teens and adults, and people who have immune system problems are all get sick from it.

The symptom of chickenpox is usually an uncomfortable, itchy rash. The rash turns into fluid-filled blisters and eventually into scabs. It usually shows up on the face, chest, and back and then spreads to the rest of the body. Other symptoms include

Fever

Headache

Tiredness

Loss of appetite

Chickenpox is usually mild and lasts 5 to 10 days. Once you catch chickenpox, you probably will not get chickenpox again, but the virus can cause shingles in adults.

Prevention tips

Chickenpox spreads easily from person to person. If you have never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine, you may get sick, however, a chickenpox vaccine can help prevent most cases of chickenpox, or make it less severe if you do get it. It is recommended for :

All healthy children 12 months of age and older who have not had chickenpox.

Healthy people who aren't sure if they've had the vaccine or chickenpox as a child.

Women who are planning to get pregnant but aren't pregnant yet.

If you can't have the chickenpox vaccine (for example, during pregnancy) a shot of antibodies (immunoglobulin) or an antiviral medicine may help delay or prevent the chickenpox.
